STARBEAST
Starbeast is the physical manifestation of my artistic practice, my conjuring of beasts. She stands a little under 5’ tall with a slight lean in her clawed footing. She represents both human and thing: a subject caught between worlds. She takes space in the corner of a gallery space, commanding the viewer’s gaze. She becomes a stand-in for the artist who often feels invisible. Your attention is her visibility. A being of light, reflection, and embodiment.
She was made over a three month period, a time span that has taught me growth and patience. She was first conceptualized in January of 2024, completed in April.
Her base was made using a duct-tape dummy cast from a mannequin, which was paper mache’d over in two parts. The wings were constructed with foam board, fabric, and black goose feathers. The claws and horns were made with air dry clay. Each scale was hand cut from holographic card stock and applied with hot glue. Her stars were applied using silver leaf and a variety of reflective sequins. Her wig was cut by yours truly.
